EMILY CUSHNIE SCHAHEEN, MD, PhD
Dr. Emily Cushnie Schaheen is a fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon who specializes in hand and upper extremity surgery, as well as microsurgery of nerves and blood vessels. Dr. Cushnie Schaheen hails from Virginia and holds doctorate degrees in both medicine and engineering. She first graduated with honors from Villanova University with a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering. Subsequently, she earned a PhD at the University of Virginia School of Engineering for her pioneering research in bone tissue engineering. Dr. Cushnie Schaheen has published numerous articles on her research in the fields of bioengineering and orthopaedic surgery and further, has authored chapters in textbooks of hand surgery.
Dr. Cushnie Schaheen’s research in bone tissue engineering prompted her career in medicine. Following her engineering education, she earned her medical degree from the University of Virginia School of Medicine. Dr. Cushnie Schaheen completed her residency in orthopaedic surgery at the University of Virginia Medical Center. She concluded her training with a fellowship at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in orthopaedic hand and upper extremity surgery, where she achieved advanced training in complex upper extremity and microvascular surgery.
